ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Pilots are using their own planes and donating fuel and time to fly supplies to Hurricane Helene victims through Angel Flight Soars.
“We’ve been to Asheville, we’ve been down to Statesboro, Georgia, we’ve been to Augusta,” said Harlan Hamlin, a volunteer pilot with Angel Flight Soars.
Angel Flight Soars is a volunteer organization that usually flies patients for free to their life-saving medical treatments. But when disasters happen, they load up and lift off.
“We have pilots from all walks of life. We have airline captains to student pilots that want to be involved,” said Hamlin.
Harlan Hamlin has been volunteering with Angel Flight Soars for over 15 years.
“Other than just flying to expensive places and spending money, being able to help these patients and conduct the mission is really, really awesome,” said Hamlin.
The smaller planes the volunteers use may not be able to pack as large of a load but they can land in places not easily accessible.
“We have the ability to get to places that other means of transportation can’t,” said Hamlin.
Pilots aren’t the only volunteers needed for this mission to work.
“There’s flight planning to be done, there are mission coordinators,” said Hamlin. “There are the ground folks that are sorting, you know, loading the materials, sorting it, bagging it.”
Ground folks like Colleen Bray Brunelle benefitted from Angel Flight Soars when they flew supplies to Oklahoma City after a fatal tornado.
“It’s always nice to be able to give back, to know what others are currently experiencing, and having witnessed and seen things of that nature,” said Brunelle.
The group also needs donations.
“Work gloves, Benadryl, bug spray... I mean some of this is simple stuff just to function day and night,” said Brunelle.
Angel Flight Soars is taking donations at the Peachtree City Airport, the DeKalb County Airport, and the Columbus Airport from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
